Mission Statement

America Links Up: A Kids Online Teach-In is a broad-based public awareness campaign to ensure that every child in America has a safe, educational and rewarding experience online. Based upon the findings, recommendations and commitments of the December 1997 Internet-Online Summit: Focus on Children, we recognize that:

  • The online world is changing how children learn, communicate, play and prepare for their future;
  • This emerging interactive technology has the potential to provide important benefits for children and families;
  • In this rapidly changing medium, the needs of children must continue to be placed front and center -- by industry, public interest and education organizations, government, and law enforcement;
  • Shaping a child's online experience is a shared responsibility that starts with the family and extends to educators, librarians, community caregivers and all who provide Internet access and content;
  • This public education campaign on the Internet seeks to reach families already online and those who are not.

Together, through the America Links Up campaign, we seek to bring together the online industry, families, teachers, librarians and other childrenís advocates to:

  • Encourage active involvement of parents, teachers and other caregivers in childrenís online experiences;
  • Educate and empower children to make wise, responsible decisions when active online;
  • Heighten awareness of the need for all children to learn the information technology skills necessary for success in their future;
  • Promote awareness of the "digital toolbox," technological and non- technological resources that promote safety and access to good content;
  • Increase public awareness of safe online behavior, including that required to protect children from harmful and illegal material and conduct;
  • Increase public awareness of the law enforcement and other resources available to protect children online; and,
  • Encourage communities to get involved with children online and create a dialogue on issues important to the community.

Together, we the participants of America Links Up -- diverse organizations with many different viewpoints and interests -- are devoted to the purpose of ensuring that all children can enjoy the benefits of the Internet in a safe, educational and entertaining environment.
